Mathematics
Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers - Shakuntala Devi
Why is Mathematics a core part of our curriculum?
Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Our aim here at HAF is to create mathematically curious problem solvers with the tools to tackle modern day living.
How do we teach Mathematics at HAF?
Students here at HAF follow a carefully designed 5 year mathematics program covering both Key Stages 3 and 4 of learning.
During the first 3 years of the course all students will learn the same topics covering all 5 aspects of mathematics: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Ratio (& Proportion), and Statistics (with probability). Students will be given instruction of methods along side linking their mathematics to the world around them. With this in mind, we have made financial maths lesson an important part of our curriculum.
From year 10 students learning will be split between foundation and higher, with students aiming at different exams at the end of year 11. The foundation course focuses on more on the Number topic than the higher course but still has an emphasis on problem solving and reasoning. The Higher course has a much higher focus on algebra and has a much higher demand in terms difficulty.
Over the 5 years of study students will be encouraged to think mathematically, reason logically and problem solve sequentially. With a use of real-life examples and utilising technology, such as graphing software, teachers aim to raise students enthusiasm and broaden their horizons in mathematics. Students will have opportunities to take part in exciting competitions such as UKMT and Federation numeracy contests.
